AfterBurn is an advanced volumetric particle effects engine plug-in that enables rendering of various realistic effects ranging from clouds, pyroclastic smoke, dust, explosions effects, liquid metals and various procedurally defined objects. Along with FumeFX, it is a perfect tool for your VFX toolbox. It has been used on numerous movie projects including Armageddon, K-19, Dracula 2000, Flight of the Phoenix and more.

Workflow

AfterBurn pioneered many unique features to 3ds max atmospherics, such as intuitive user interface layout, custom gradient and AFC controllers, HyperSolids rendering engine, volumetric metaballs, volumetric Daemons, support for Rendering Effects and more.

AfterBurn workflow

Animation

Almost every parameter inside the AfterBurn UI can be controlled over the particle lifespan. Custom gradient and curve controls are available for more productive work.
AfterBurn controller

Controllers

AfterBurn controllers enable you to vary parameters by particle age, particle velocity, distance from the emitter or any other object in the scene, Thinking Particles channel or Krakatoa float channel.
AfterBurn's preview window

Preview

The preview window renders a single particle and allows for faster noise adjustments and look development.
AfterBurn Particles - support for TP and Particle Flow

Particles

AfterBurn fully supports built-in 3ds max particle systems and 3rd party systems such as cebas' Thinking Particles.
AfterBurn offers various procedural noise types

Procedural Noise

With seven different built-in noise types (Fractal, Turbulent, Fbm Fractal, Fbm Turbulent, Rock, Smoke, Spots) and ability to use 3ds max 3D Maps as a noise source, an infinite variety of noise shapes can be created.
AfterBurn Daemons - volumetric deformers

Daemons

AfterBurn Daemons are helper objects that affect AfterBurn and AfterBurn Combustion by altering noise and color throughout the volume.

Rendering

AfterBurn offers several rendering modes, ranging from the ultra-fast Octane Shader to volumetric Raymarcher and HyperSolids.

AfterBurn Rendering
AfterBurn's ultra fast Octane Shder

Octane Shader

This ultra-fast render engine is excellent for adding light dust, background smoke or similar effect to any scene.
The Raymarcher for detailed procedural volumetrics in 3ds max

Raymarcher

It is capable of producing crisp shadows on high-density smoke, explosions and clouds with realistic light interaction.
Procedural solids rendering engine/

Hyper Solids

Using this technology it is possible to render solids or liquids without a single polygon.
